The Joys of Selling Disney
By Dotti Saroufim         Boston, MA

In a past life, before diapers, carpools, first dates, and college graduations ate up 25 years of my existence, I was a systems analyst. I may not have been rolling in dough, but I worked hard and made a good living. I traveled. I ate in good restaurants. I explored new and exciting locations and took lots and lots of photos.

Once the days of school volunteering were over, and the kids became adults, it was time to find something else to fill that void. But what to do? Photography, as much as I love it, wasn’t going to be a lucrative profession unless I bribed someone, and quite heavily. The only one thing besides my family that I was truly passionate about was Walt Disney World. Since 1992, when I went on my “one and only trip” with my boys, then 10, 6 and 5, I’ve been obsessed.  Over 40 trips later, I still can’t get enough of it. I had sat for countless hours with friends, and neighbors, and neighbors of friends, mapping out park-visiting strategies, finding the best restaurants, and recommending hotels to meet their needs. Why not do this as a business?

One thing I promised myself that I would never become was a “salesman.”  I mean no disrespect to anyone in that profession – it’s just that I sold Sears’ maintenance agreements by phone when I was 17 years old, and have been severely traumatized by so many people hanging up on me. I will never try to convince someone to purchase something, especially a “trip of a lifetime,” unless it’s truly the right choice for them. I will not “upsell” someone a more expensive resort if what they can afford is the All Star Movies. I won’t tell them they MUST have Cirque de Soleil tickets if they’re counting their pennies just to be able to eat while on vacation. Luckily, the company I’m fortunate enough to be working for also has the guest’s best interest in mind! Finding MouseEarVacations.com was a perfect match for me!

What are the benefits of selling Disney travel, you might ask?  As Authorized Disney Vacation Planners, we get discounts on one park pass per year for our use. (I don’t need it – I have an annual pass.) We get occasional discounted rooms. (Doesn’t help… I’m a Disney Vacation Club Member.)  We get occasional discounts on cruises and Adventures by Disney vacations. (Okay, I’ll admit that I do like that.) The biggest perk of all, besides getting to listen to great Disney tunes while on hold all day? Having your clients return from a trip that was in the planning for years and hearing that their vacation was the best it could ever have been all because of YOU. That your tips and advice and restaurant recommendations made everything go smoothly and seamlessly, and that they’ll have wonderful memories to cherish forever.

I’m still not rolling in dough… but I also still travel, eat in good restaurants, explore new and exciting attractions, and take lots and lots of photos. But best of all, I get to do it in the “most magical place on earth,” and say, “But I have to go… it’s my job!”
